Relatively speaking, we’ve all been attracted to that label-less can of green beans (or is it corn? perhaps potatoes?) haunting our cupboards, leaving us wondering both its mysterious content and its edibility. I most often find myself in this situation when my wife and kids are out of town and I’m left home alone, scavenging through the cupboards for food as if the star of my very own food-inspired episode of Intervention. Luckily for us all, today my thoughts turn to “the can” for reasons other than cooking incompetence.
As a public relations specialist for Sunmark Federal Credit Union, it is my pleasure to announce that the company is dedicating 2011 to the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York. This is more than just splashing a logo on a billboard or blasting out a cookie-cutter press release. We are expanding our Member Helping Member campaign and now incorporating nonprofits into the fold. In 2008, our credit union instituted a network between Sunmark’s members and businesses to foster cooperation in dealing with economic and energy issues facing residents of the Capital Region. The program has now been expanded to the nonprofit sector as we look to increase our reach in helping members and residents of the region.
We’re looking forward to this cause and have a number of events scheduled throughout the capital region. One, our very own golf event will be held on August 19 to both promote the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York, and to raise, what we hope will be record funding. So, as the Chinese New Year dedicates itself to the Year of the Golden Rabbit, I dedicate my New Year to “the can.”
